Skincare for Winter Skin

Seasonal skincare is a way to integrate your self care with the seasonal changes, tune into the magic of your body and the magic of nature all at the same time! In the summer, we want light, cooling treats for sun soaked skin. In the winter, soothing ingredients and extra pampering for holiday stress are nourishing and welcome.

Body care tools, like a bar of soap or an anointing oil, are transformed into ritual tools when we infuse them with magical intention. As this intensely challenging year comes to a close, be sure to take time to engage your pleasure principles and carve out time for self care. How does it feel to massage tired legs with a hydrating body butter? Does taking 10 minutes for a soothing face mask at the end of a long week help bolster your spirit? Does gifting a luscious bath bomb to your stressed roommate bring your home joy? Self care and community care fill our cup, allowing us to continue to engage in the practices that bring our lives meaning.

This recipe is filled with extra hydrating ingredients for harsh winter weather, and you can infuse them with magical intention! As you make these products, consider adding a spell:

Write out your intention and place it in a spot you can see while you craft. Perhaps one of the following - “I am a work of art” - “I can achieve anything I set my mind to” - “I let my love for myself increase each day” - “The Universe supports me always.” Light a candle and say your intention aloud as you prep and mix your ingredients. When you are finished, set your products on top of your intention-paper to cool and set. This is a spell to infuse your products with self-love and compassion.

Hydrating Salve: This salve can easily be adjusted based on your preferences or what you have on hand, the key ingredient being the beeswax to help it set. If you are vegan or otherwise don’t use beeswax, candelilla wax is a great substitute. Feel free to use whatever vessel works for you, you can even reuse a cleaned out chapstick tube! Sustainability for the win!

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon coconut oil (another oil would work here, but it might not set as firmly - use a jar or tin if you are subbing anything for coconut oil here)

1 tablespoon beeswax or candelilla wax

1 tablespoon shea butter or cocoa butter

3 drops essential oil - lavender for calming, peppermint for uplifting, or rosemary for protection

Using a double boiler (or a heat proof bowl set over a pot of boiling water) add your ingredients except essential oil. Melt everything together, and take off the heat before it boils. Add your 3 drops of essential oil, and stir. Carefully pour your hot oils into your vessel, and let cool overnight. Use on dry hands, lips, healed tattoos, or whatever parts need some extra loving!
