08-27-2022 - Full Bloom: Herbal Embroidery Magic
Drawing with stitches, a technique known as embroidery, is not just a means for an end, it’s an exploration of materials and an invitation to slow down and spend some time listening to a long-form process. There is mind-altering magic available through engaging in your own creative pursuits. This personal liberation through slow craft and creative expression is what we’ll be exploring during this workshop.
After exploring examples of textiles as talisman, and guiding us through a visualization meditation, Christi will lead us through a basic lesson in embroidery. She will demonstrate a series of introductory stitches such as; backstitch, running stitch, satin stitch, chain stitch, and star stitch. We'll then learn how to apply these stitches to our work with our herbal allies; exploring the potentials of each stitch as well as touching on the magic of plants as it applies to creating our own talisman.
These stitches will set you on your way towards your own meditative practice and expressing your own living myth through symbolism created with fiber and thread. Our conscious minds speak in language, our subconscious speaks in images. By stitching a patch to a sacred textile, you're offering a representation of your intention that you’re able to interact with frequently. No embroidery skills are needed, though familiarity with the basics will help!
This is a live workshop, with a recording available for 2 weeks sent out to all registered participants.

About the Instructor:
Christi Johnson's (she/her) art combines cosmic visions and botanical beauties, she teaches embroidery and textile arts for the visionary who wants to transform their dreams into textural designs on fabric through the art of embroidery. She's the author of Mystical Stitches, a book about creating symbolic embroideries for personal empowerment and magical embellishment. In 2015, Johnson founded Mixed Color, a textile studio in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate New York, which produces original garments and creates embroidered pieces on vintage garments. To not only educate others on these ancient skills, but also share the methods of her own creative practice, she offers workshops and classes on working with embroidery as a personal magic ritual, and has been teaching textile arts since 2013.
