We will unravel different aspects of Eastern European death and burial rituals, from the preparation of the deceased for their final journey, to the intricate symbolism displayed in cemeteries.
In this 2-hour class, we'll explore:
- Eastern Orthodox Christianity and paganism co-existing in death rituals and beliefs about the afterlife
- Finno-Ugric influence on Slavic pagan burial beliefs and rituals
- Ancestor veneration practices, and accepting your own relationship with aging and death
- Folk beliefs and rituals related to death
- The stages of Eastern European funeral ceremonies
- Cemeteries, their symbolism and importance as a social and cultural space
- Modern day superstitions and taboos related to death
- Literary representations and themes of death and burial rituals in folklore and myths
- Step by step guide of celebrating Dziady this October
Please bring the following to class:
- Journal and pen for note taking
- Any snacks, drinks, or tools you need for feel comfortable
